A dramatic makeover of a standard 1980s brick house on a premiere property overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Jayne Hackett, architect, who sadly passed away before this building was fully documented, had already envisaged the amazing transformation and had achieved DA.  Due to our strong friendship, knowing she could not finish, she asked us to take over.  It has been a real privilege.

Very quickly we brought Josie onto the team, because so much of the interior needed detailed attention.  She also assisted with a lot of materials selection.

As you can tell by the photographs, a whole third story was added for a very generous master zone with the most amazing ocean views.  There is even a view from the shower.  A very generous study zone was also placed up on this level.

An early decision was to include a lift.  The engineers ended up loving this because it became their core structural element.  The lift has transformed bringing in groceries and moving anything into the building, let alone helping people with less mobility.

The front part of the old top story, now the mid-level, was redone especially the kitchen and deck.  A lot of attention has gone into selecting materials that can handle the salty environment.  The builder went further and used high-end stainless-steel fittings or glues wherever possible.  The kitchen now has openness and a grand feel, plus a very generous butler’s pantry.

Windows were revised here and there, along with totally new doors onto the deck.  The exterior has been clad in materials including copper that can handle the marine environment.  This included the entry and garage.

Air conditioning is rarely used, because just opening one or two windows at the rear and the whole thing is a beautifully pleasant building to be in.
