What do you do with a block box, with hardly any natural light that almost ignores its canal aspect?

Open it up to the sky and the canal!

Our clients came to us through Kim Duffin the great kitchen designer, desperate to fix the house.  They’d bought what was obviously a secure house, but had not realised how deficient it was.  The building was dark and over compartmentalized.  Weirdly it did not take much benefit from being on a beautiful canal.  There was not one north facing window.

Very quickly we deduced that going radical was the best option, and suggested a huge clerestory be cut in.  The house is now full of light and very welcoming.

In addition, we utterly revised the rear zone by creating an enclosable court with lots of stacking doors and screens.  This now provides great outlook while still controlling the considerable winds coming up the canal.  We even cut in a door to the front bedroom and added a mini-porch.

The kitchen is a huge statement within this happy space.  It works well with two people in it or a cast of many.

A true transformation.
