A small change with a huge impact. The original deck was a bit small, and had a large concrete column blocking the view. The steel handrails somewhat suited the house’s Tuscan influences, but they further impacted the view. We added 1.5m to one end of the concrete slab with a carefully considered steel bracket system and a waterproofed timber frame. Adrian Dine of ADStructure helped us solve how to join it all to the existing cavity brick wall without damage. Graeme Jarrett, the builder, was brilliant at solving the complex issues on a tiny project. The deck space is now generous with excellent views. So as not to expend too much budget on rebuilding the roof, a small Vergola opening roof was used to provide valuable shading.
